Brette Sember over at her blog, Martha and Me, has been hosting Martha Mondays for the past couple months where every Monday readers and admiring bloggers like myself all endeavor to cook, craft or do some other fabulous Martha Stewart good thing. Last week, I couldn't resist the task at hand: baking Martha's Molasses Spice Cake. Now, the beauty of Brette's blog is that she's brutally honest. If a project is a disaster, she'll tell you all about it, but if it's a success, she'll be just as enthusiastic. I'm so happy to say that for me - for Brette too - this cake was a smashing success.
In the past I use to make a cake for the hubby and me to polish off together, but age, slower metabolisms and stomach aches have forced us to invite guests over to share in the gluttony. I can't say enough good things about the Molasses Spice Cake. What I thought was going to be too much what with its ginger cake, cream cheese frosting and brown sugar glaze was actually a great balance of moist, spicy cake with slightly tart frosting and a sweet, caramel-y glaze. Also, I couldn't have picked a better weekend. Fall has finally shown itself with chilly days. Brisk air always calls for something cozy and sweet to eat.
If you do make this and I suggest making the cake the night before and the frostings the next day. You'll be more relaxed and able to enjoy every morsel. Now that I think of it, these would make lovely cupcakes too. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteMmm...this treat looks like it would cure just about anything!
ReplyDeleteIt is actually a really soothing cake. Perfect for moody rainy days!
ReplyDeleteThis looks terrific - great for a holiday!
ReplyDeleteI got to enjoy this tasty treat first hand with Peggy. Thank you Peggy! I'd like to say that the cake you sent home with me lasted a couple of days. But, you know that would be a lie. I couldn't resist. Both the sweet and spice were mild and complemented each other perfectly. Hmmm, this is making me hungry for it again. I wish I had a hot cup of tea and a slice of cake. Afternoon tea anyone?
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you posted this. I want to try making this cake (after reading Brette's blog. So this is a good reminder. (Also, I don't eat pork so the recipe you posted today is not one I will be trying...)
ReplyDeleteI must say, this cake was the perfect end to a wonderful meal and a great evening!
